Overview

The Brisbane South PHN (BSPHN) website refresh project aimed to address recent feedback from practices and staff, focusing on challenges related to content discoverability, general navigation difficulties, and an outdated design.

As the exclusive web development partner of BSPHN, I took on the responsibility of designing, developing, and maintaining the website. Collaborating with Malu Creative, a 100% Indigenous-owned and operated web design freelancer, our objective was to implement a range of updates including a new mega menu design, refreshed home page, header, and footer designs, as well as improvements to news and events pages with advanced filtering functionality. The redesign ensures optimisation for both desktop and mobile devices, with a specific emphasis on accommodating increased mobile traffic.

Challenges

  1. Content Discoverability: Ensuring that relevant content is easily discoverable for both practices and staff. Wordpress's standard search, and with assisted plugins for improved results still had difficulty with results. Moving to Statamic and their quality out of the box search algorithm, with the option of utilising the gold-standard of search, Algolia, in future.

  2. Modern Design: Ensuring that the new design created is modern, while also being crafted around the brand new page sitemap and rewritten content provided to ensure usability from a user experience (UX) perspective.

  3. Mobile Optimisation: Adapting the design to accommodate the significant increase in mobile traffic.

Solution

  1. Collaborative Discovery and Strategy: Worked closely with stakeholders to understand project goals and design aspirations, establishing the foundation for the development process.

  2. Content & Sitemap Focus: Prioritised content and page sitemap to build the website around user-centric content.

  3. Wireframes and Layout: Created wireframes based on the page structure and content, emphasising user flow and ease of use.

  4. Formal Sign-offs: Implemented formal sign-off processes for wireframes and design phases to ensure alignment with project goals.

  5. Cultural Design: Collaborated with Malu Creative to incorporate design inspiration from the discovery stage, creating a culturally sensitive, modern and visually appealing design.

  6. Custom Development: Executed the development phase, translating the signed-off design into a functional website, implementing technical SEO, and ensuring a seamless transition with 301 redirects.

  7. Thorough Testing: Conducted cross-browser, cross-device, and responsive testing to guarantee a consistent and bug-free user experience.

  8. Seamless Launch: Launched the website without downtime, ensuring a smooth transition for users.

Results

  1. Enhanced User Experience: The redesigned website addresses concerns related to content discoverability and navigation difficulties, providing an improved user experience.

  2. Mobile-Friendly Design: The optimisation for mobile devices caters to the increased mobile traffic, enhancing accessibility for users.

  3. Culturally Sensitive Redesign: The collaboration with Malu Creative and time spent during the collaborative discovery and strategy phase ensured a culturally sensitive and visually appealing design that aligns with BSPHN's goals.
